Hellenic Motor Museum
The Hellenic Motor Museum in Athens is dedicated to the history, evolution, and cultural impact of the automobile.
It was founded by Theodore N. Charagionis, whose lifelong passion for cars led him to begin collecting classic and rare vehicles in the 1970s. Over time, his private collection grew significantly and eventually developed into the foundation for a museum that would share this passion with the public.
The idea of creating a motor museum emerged as the collection expanded to dozens of vehicles, making it increasingly difficult to maintain purely as a personal hobby. The founder envisioned a space that would not only preserve automotive heritage but also contribute to culture, education, tourism, and the positive international image of modern Greece. This vision led to the gradual development of a large-scale project in central Athens.
After many years of planning and land acquisition, the museum was established in a purpose-built facility in Athens, designed to accommodate a large collection of vehicles and support spaces for exhibitions, education, and events. The museum includes exhibition areas for over one hundred cars, a spiral ramp displaying historic wheels and automotive evolution, as well as an auditorium, educational spaces focused on road safety and driving awareness, and a museum shop.
The collection features a wide range of important automobiles, including classic, luxury, and racing cars from different eras, showcasing the technological and design evolution of the global automotive industry. Visitors can explore the history of mobility through carefully curated exhibits that highlight engineering innovation and cultural change.
Beyond its role as a museum of technology and design, the Hellenic Motor Museum also functions as an educational centre, promoting road safety and responsible driving, especially among younger audiences. Through interactive exhibits and educational programmes, it aims to raise awareness about safe road behaviour.
