Maria Callas Museum

The Maria Callas Museum in Athens is dedicated to the life, career, and artistic legacy of the legendary soprano Maria Callas, one of the most influential opera singers of the 20th century.

As a museum of performing arts and biography, it celebrates her exceptional talent, unique interpretation of opera, and lasting impact on the world of music.

The museum was created with the aim of introducing visitors to the brilliance of Maria Callas’ artistry while also revealing the woman behind the international fame. Through its permanent exhibition, the museum explores her personality, artistic technique, and the reasons why her performances remain unforgettable even today. At the same time, it seeks to inspire younger generations and promote musical education through interactive and educational experiences.

The exhibition is designed as a journey through Callas’ life and artistic career. Visitors begin their tour on the second floor, where specially designed rooms recreate the atmosphere of three of her most famous operas: Norma, Tosca, and La Traviata. The exhibition also highlights the masterclasses she gave at the Juilliard School in New York, presenting her role not only as a performer but also as a mentor to younger artists.

On the first floor, visitors follow the story of her life, from her childhood and early studies to her rise to international fame and her final years. Personal objects, photographs, audiovisual material, and historical documents reveal the important moments of her journey as well as the people who influenced her, including her teachers, collaborators, and mentors.

Maria Callas transformed the art of opera with her extraordinary voice, dramatic expression, and interpretive depth. Her performances changed the standards of opera singing, creating what many describe as a new era in lyric art. Today, the Maria Callas Museum serves not only as a tribute to her legacy but also as a cultural and educational center that keeps her memory and artistic spirit alive for audiences from around the world.
