School Life Museum

The Museum of School Life in Nerokouros, Chania, is housed in the old primary school building of Nerokouros village, located just 6 kilometers from the city of Chania.

The historic school building, originally constructed in 1929 on land donated by the Monastery of Saint George of Nerokouros, was carefully restored in order to accommodate the museum’s collections and modern educational activities. The school itself dates back to the academic year 1899–1900, while the new school facilities for the village were completed in 2001.

The Museum of School Life officially opened to the public in 2006 and is considered the first Museum of Education in Greece organized by professional museologists and educational experts. The idea for the museum was initiated in 1998 by two active primary school teachers, Dimitris Kartsakis and Maria Drakaki, who envisioned a cultural and educational center dedicated not only to preserving school artifacts, but also to promoting the history and social role of education in Crete and Greece.

The museum was founded by the Chania Prefectural Administration and developed through the cooperation of educators, local authorities, volunteers, researchers, and the local community. Over the years, volunteers visited abandoned schools throughout the Chania region, collecting valuable educational materials and preserving items that would otherwise have been lost.

Today, the museum presents a rich collection of historical school objects and educational materials, including old wooden desks, blackboards, textbooks, notebooks, maps, teaching aids, school archives, photographs, and classroom equipment from different periods of Greek educational history. Through its exhibits, visitors can experience the atmosphere of traditional Greek classrooms and discover the daily life of students and teachers from the past.

One of the museum’s main goals is to connect people with the human stories behind education. The collections are enriched by personal testimonies, memories, and narratives from former students, teachers, and local residents, making the museum a living center of cultural memory rather than simply an exhibition space.

The museum also offers educational programs, workshops, cultural events, lectures, and interactive activities for students and families. School visits include guided tours and experiential learning activities that help children understand the evolution of education and school life through participation and play.

The Museum of School Life in Chania serves as an important cultural and educational institution, preserving the educational heritage of Crete while promoting learning, creativity, and community involvement. Through the dedication of its founders, volunteers, and supporters, the museum continues to inspire visitors of all ages and keep the history of Greek education alive.
