Gounaropoulos Museum

Gounaropoulos Museum

The G. Gounaropoulos Museum is dedicated to the life and work of the important Greek painter Georgios Gounaropoulos. It was founded in 1979 and officially opened to the public in 1980.

The museum is housed in the artist’s former home and studio in the area of Ano Ilisia in Athens, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience both his artistic work and personal environment.

The museum’s collection includes more than forty oil paintings and drawings by Gounaropoulos, along with objects from his daily life and material from his personal archive. The building and the artworks were donated to the Municipality of Zografou by the artist’s son, Elias Gounaropoulos, with the aim of preserving and promoting the painter’s artistic legacy.

The museum’s primary mission is to introduce the public to the distinctive artistic style of Georgios Gounaropoulos, whose dreamlike compositions and poetic use of light made him one of the most recognizable figures in modern Greek art.

In 1994, the Municipality of Zografou expanded the museum by creating the Art and Cultural Center next to the original building. This addition allowed the institution to organize temporary exhibitions and a wide range of cultural events related not only to painting, but also to sculpture, photography, literature, poetry, and folk art.

The Cultural Center includes three exhibition and event spaces. The “Georgios Gounaropoulos Hall” hosts temporary art exhibitions, the “Stratis Tsirkas Hall” presents material related to the Greek writer Stratis Tsirkas and also serves as an exhibition space, while the “Georgios Pavlatos Hall” is used for lectures, screenings, and cultural presentations.

Today, the museum and cultural center operate together as a unified cultural institution under the supervision of the Municipality of Zografou, continuing to promote artistic education and cultural activity in Athens.
