Chios Maritime Museum
The Chios Maritime Museum is housed in a traditional neoclassical mansion in the city center, donated by the Pateras family.
Built in the early 20th century, the building preserves its architectural character, featuring elegant ceiling decorations and spacious interior rooms. It has been carefully renovated to present its collections in a harmonious and authentic environment.
The museum is dedicated to the long maritime tradition of Chios, one of the most important naval centres in Greece. Its collections include nautical artefacts, ship models, equipment, and historical documents that illustrate the development of Greek shipping, with special emphasis on the post–World War II period and the growth of modern commercial shipping.
The exhibitions also highlight the significant contribution of Chiot seafarers to global trade and their long-standing maritime history over the centuries. The museum functions as a centre for research and cultural activity, hosting lectures, conferences, and collaborations with other maritime museums and academic institutions.
In the museum garden, there is a monument dedicated to the seafarers who lost their lives during World War II, honouring their sacrifice and contribution to the maritime history of the island.
