Museum of the Foundation for the Epirotic Studies
The Folklore Museum “Kostas Frontzos” of the Society for Epirote Studies (E.H.M.) and I.M.I.A.H. is housed in a historic 19th-century Ottoman mansion in Ioannina, which formerly served as an important educational institution of the city.
The museum was founded by Kostas Frontzos and opened in 1987, one year after his death, with the aim of preserving and showcasing the folk cultural heritage of Epirus.
The museum’s collection consists of objects gathered through purchases and donations that reflect the daily life and artistic creativity of the region of Epirus. A prominent place is held by traditional costumes, especially the richly decorated women’s garments from Ioannina and other areas of Epirus, as well as valuable examples of Ioannina’s renowned silversmithing tradition.
The collections also include weapons, textiles, embroideries, ceramics, woodcarvings, and everyday household objects, all of which highlight the social and economic life of Epirote communities over time. A special section is dedicated to memorabilia from the liberation of Ioannina in 1913, linking the museum to important historical moments of the region.
Through its permanent exhibition and activities, the museum functions as a center for the study and promotion of Epirote tradition, offering visitors a comprehensive insight into the culture, history, and aesthetics of the region.
