Silversmithing Museum of Ioannina
The Silversmithing Museum is located inside the Castle of Ioannina, in the western bastion of the southeastern citadel known as Its Kale.
The museum occupies the two levels of the bastion as well as the adjacent building of the old kitchens, creating a unique cultural space dedicated to the history and technology of silversmithing in Epirus.
The main purpose of the museum is to preserve and promote the knowledge of traditional silversmithing, an art closely connected with the economic and social development of the region. It presents the evolution of silverworking techniques while highlighting the important role of silversmiths in the local society of Epirus.
The museum is both thematic and regional, focusing mainly on the history of silversmithing in Epirus during the post Byzantine period from the 15th century onwards, while also including references to earlier historical periods. Through modern exhibition methods, audiovisual material, documentary films, and interactive applications, visitors can discover the traditional techniques used for shaping and decorating silver objects and learn about every stage of the production process.
On the first level, the exhibition introduces visitors to the history of silversmithing and the different techniques used in the crafting of silverware. On the second level, a rich collection of Epirus silver and goldsmith works dating from the 18th to the 20th century is displayed. The collection includes jewelry, weapons, military equipment, household silverware, and personal objects decorated with remarkable detail and craftsmanship.
The museum also includes references to contemporary silversmithing through works created by modern craftsmen who continue the long standing tradition of the region. Interactive digital games and educational programs further enrich the visitor experience, making the museum accessible and engaging for people of all ages.
The creation of the museum was carried out by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Ioannina. It officially opened in 2016 and today stands as one of the most important thematic museums in Greece, preserving and showcasing the rich artistic heritage of Epirus silversmithing.
