Maritime Museum of Kavala
The Kavala Maritime Museum was established with the aim of highlighting the maritime history and tradition of the city of Kavala, which is closely connected to its port and long-standing seafaring activity.
Inside the museum, visitors can explore a rich collection of maritime and navigational instruments, scale models of traditional vessels, and books related to seafaring and naval history. These exhibits illustrate the development of maritime knowledge and technology over time. A special place is given to seascape paintings by local artists from Kavala, which reflect the city’s deep relationship with the sea and its port.
The exhibition also includes numerous historical photographs depicting the port of Kavala and its constant activity across different periods, offering a vivid view of the commercial and social life that developed around it. Among the most remarkable exhibits are a traditional fishing boat (trechantiri) dating from 1961, as well as a historic boat from 1932 that operated during the German–Bulgarian occupation of World War II. These vessels provide visitors with a tangible connection to the maritime heritage and historical experiences of the region. Overall, the Kavala Maritime Museum serves as an important cultural institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the maritime identity of Kavala, linking the city’s past with its present.
