Municipal Art Gallery G I Katsigra Museum of Larissa
The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa – G.I. Katsigras Museum is one of the most important cultural institutions in Thessaly and Greece in the field of visual arts.
It was established following the major donation made in 1981 by Georgios and Kaiti Katsigras to the Municipality of Larissa, consisting of 781 paintings, engravings, and drawings. The donation was made on the condition that a dedicated institution would be created under the name “Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa – G.I. Katsigras Museum.”
Since its foundation in 1983, the gallery has played a significant role in promoting and supporting visual arts in Larissa, the wider Thessaly region, and throughout Greece. In 2003, it moved into its new privately owned building, where part of the Katsigras Collection was permanently exhibited for the first time, together with the historic furniture of Heinrich Schliemann. In 2019, the redesigned permanent exhibition titled “RE-CONNECT” was inaugurated, presenting 180 works from the Katsigras Collection through a contemporary museological approach. The exhibition was curated by art historian Syrago Tsiara and is accompanied by a bilingual catalogue. The gallery regularly hosts important solo and group exhibitions, as well as collaborations with museums, galleries, and cultural institutions. The atrium on the first floor is also used for painting, sculpture, and printmaking exhibitions. In addition, the gallery develops extensive educational and cultural activities through lectures, educational programs, screenings, and art workshops, contributing to the artistic education and cultural enrichment of the public. It also includes an art library with reading and lending services and collaborates with artists, institutions, museums, and galleries in Greece and abroad, promoting artistic exchange and cultural cooperation.
