Folegandros Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum of Ano Meria in Folegandros is an open-air museum that offers visitors a vivid journey back in time.

It is housed in a traditional 19th-century “thimoniá,” a characteristic rural farm complex that functioned as a fully organised and self-sufficient agricultural and livestock unit. The museum presents in detail how such a unit operated, along with many aspects of everyday life on the island up until the mid-20th century.

The complex includes a complete traditional house and stable area, equipped with original tools and objects used in daily rural life. Visitors can see elements such as the cistern, well, oven, wine press, threshing floor, olive press, washing area, and cellar filled with jars, utensils, sieves, scarecrows, and oil lamps. The living spaces recreate the atmosphere of a typical household of the period, giving the impression that life could resume at any moment.

Inside the main residence, objects such as weaving looms, kitchen utensils, and a carefully arranged bedroom highlight the domestic environment of past generations. Of particular interest are historical photographs from early photographic studios, one of the first Greek-made sewing machines (depicting Queen Saint Olga), and a decorated travel chest from Crete dating before 1940. The museum as a whole represents a miniature model of traditional society, preserving the authentic character of rural life.

The museum was created through the dedicated efforts of the Cultural Association “Folegandros,” under the initiative of Markos Venios, its founder and director. Built with traditional materials such as stone, mud, wood, and slate, the complex reflects the ingenuity and functionality of Cycladic architecture, adapted to the island’s harsh environment and historical conditions.

As the first open-air “eco-museum” in Greece, it operates during the summer months and continues to preserve and present the cultural identity of Folegandros, offering visitors an immersive experience of traditional island life and heritage.
