Milos Mining Museum

Milos Mining Museum

The Mining Museum of Milos is located in Adamas, the main port of the island, and is dedicated to showcasing the rich geological and mining history of Milos.

The museum highlights the island’s unique mineral wealth and honors the generations of people who worked in the mining industry, which played a major role in the economic and cultural development of Milos throughout its long history.

The museum was created with the support of Imerys Industrial Minerals Greece and officially opened to the public in 1998. Its mission is both educational and cultural, aiming to inform visitors about the island’s volcanic origins, mineral resources, and the evolution of mining activities from prehistoric times to the present day.

Inside the museum, visitors can explore exhibits featuring photographs, maps, mining tools, geological samples, and audiovisual material that illustrate the development of mining on the island. The ground floor introduces the history of mining in Milos through historical images, authentic equipment, geological and topographical maps, and presentations of modern mining operations and environmental restoration projects.

The first floor is dedicated to the island’s mineral wealth, displaying impressive mineral specimens that are still extracted and processed on Milos today. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to learn about the properties and uses of these minerals in everyday life and industry.

One of the museum’s most important attractions is the Obsidian Collection of local folklorist and collector Zafeiris Vaos. The collection includes prehistoric obsidian tools and artifacts made from the volcanic glass that made Milos one of the most important suppliers of obsidian in the Aegean for thousands of years. These artifacts provide valuable insight into early toolmaking and prehistoric trade networks in the region.

The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions, scientific conferences, educational programs, and guided visits to mines and geological sites across the island. Through its exhibitions and activities, the Mining Museum of Milos successfully connects the island’s geological past with its modern industrial identity, offering visitors a fascinating journey into the natural and cultural history of Milos.
