Andros Maritime Museum

Andros Maritime Museum

The Andros Maritime Museum was founded in 1972 with the aim of preserving, studying, and showcasing the island’s rich maritime heritage, which is a central element of Andros’ history and identity.

It is located in the capital, Chora, near the square of the “Unknown Sailor,” in a building that was donated to the Municipality of Andros in 1957.

The museum’s collections include important documents and artifacts related to Andros’ commercial shipping history from the 18th century to the present day. Among them are ship agreements (naulosymvola), insurance contracts, and nautical logbooks that describe the lives of Andrian sailors before the Greek War of Independence of 1821. The collection also features lithographs and photographs of Andrian ships, ranging from traditional sailing vessels to the first steam-powered cargo ships and modern tankers.

Particularly notable are the ship models, which illustrate the evolution of shipbuilding from traditional schooners to today’s large commercial vessels. The museum also exhibits traditional Andrian uniforms and related items, offering a vivid depiction of sailors’ everyday life through the centuries.

The Andros Maritime Museum is an important cultural institution that highlights the island’s deep connection with the sea and takes visitors on a journey through the history of Greek commercial shipping.
