Museum of Science and Technology, Patras University
The Museum of Science and Technology of the University of Patras is a dynamic space dedicated to informal education, experimentation, creativity, and public engagement with science.
Located within the University Campus, the museum was established in 2001 as a laboratory of the School of Natural Sciences and officially opened to the public in 2009. Since then, it has become an important cultural and educational center for students, researchers, schools, and visitors of all ages.
The museum aims to connect science and technology with everyday life through interactive and accessible experiences. Its permanent exhibition, titled “Telecommunications in Our Lives,” presents the history and evolution of communication technologies and their impact on society. Alongside the permanent collection, the museum organizes a wide range of temporary exhibitions focusing on science, technology, the environment, innovation, and the relationship between science and art. A central mission of the museum is to strengthen the connection between the University and society. Through educational programs, guided tours, workshops, seminars, lectures, competitions, and cultural events, visitors have the opportunity to explore scientific concepts in an engaging and enjoyable way. The museum also collaborates with schools, educational institutions, and cultural organizations, promoting scientific and technological literacy across all levels of education. The Museum of Science and Technology places special emphasis on experiential learning. Students of the University of Patras actively participate in its activities through volunteering, internships, and educational projects, contributing to the organization of exhibitions and educational actions. In this way, the museum serves not only as a place of learning for the public but also as a valuable training environment for future educators and scientists. The creation of the museum was inspired by former Rector Stamatis Alahiotis, while its first director, Vassilis Marmaras, played a significant role in its organization and development. Over the years, the museum has continuously expanded its activities, modernized its exhibitions, and increased its visitor numbers, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors annually. Today, the Museum of Science and Technology continues to evolve as an innovative educational and cultural institution, promoting knowledge, creativity, scientific thinking, and lifelong learning while highlighting the importance of science and technology in modern society.
