The Floating Naval Museum Battleship “Georgios Averof” is one of the most significant historic ships of modern Greece and a living monument of the country’s naval heritage.

The battleship “Georgios Averof” was launched in 1910 and played a decisive role in modern Greek history, taking part in the Balkan Wars, the Asia Minor Campaign, as well as both the First and Second World Wars. It was decommissioned in 1952 and remained moored at Poros until 1983.

In 1984, the Hellenic Navy decided to convert it into a floating museum and transfer it to Faliro, where it is permanently berthed today, serving as a landmark of the history and traditions of the Hellenic Navy. Since 2010, it has also functioned as the flagship office of the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff.

The ship has been honored for its service to the nation, receiving in 2003 the Gold Medal of the Academy of Athens, while in 2017 its flag was awarded the decoration of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Redeemer by the President of the Hellenic Republic.

Today, the battleship “Georgios Averof” operates as a museum and educational site, welcoming visitors, schools, and organized groups. Through its exhibits and historical presence, it highlights Greece’s naval history and keeps alive the memory of the struggles and people of the Hellenic Navy.
