Municipal Art Gallery of Piraeus
The Piraeus Municipal Gallery is one of the most important cultural institutions of the Municipality of Piraeus.
Its roots go back to the 19th century, when the municipality began acquiring works of art, including significant paintings such as Konstantinos Volanakis’ “The Port of Piraeus” (1886). The Gallery was formally recognized in the mid-20th century, while in 1985 a dedicated Department of Galleries and Museums was established, marking a new phase in its organization and development.
Since 2004, the Gallery has been permanently housed in the neoclassical building of the Old Post Office, located at the junction of Filonos Street and Karaoli & Dimitriou Street. The building itself, constructed in 1902, provides an appropriate historical setting for the exhibition of artworks and archival material.
Today, the Municipal Gallery hosts a rich and diverse collection of Greek art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Its permanent collections include paintings by major Greek artists such as Konstantinos Volanakis, Nikolaos and Periklis Lytras, Konstantinos Maleas, Michael Economou, Vasilios Hatzis, and Alexandros Christofis. It also features important collections of sculpture, stage design, and visual arts.
Among its most notable holdings are the works and archive of stage designer Panos Aravantinou, the sculptures of Georgios Kastriotis, the artistic creations of Stamatis Lazaros, and the works of painter Kyriakos Tsakiris. The archive of the acclaimed actor Manos Katrakis is also preserved, including costumes, photographs, sketches, and personal documents that reflect his artistic career.
In addition to its permanent exhibitions, the Gallery regularly organizes temporary exhibitions featuring contemporary artists, as well as cultural events such as lectures, book presentations, and music evenings. It also runs educational programs and guided tours for students of all educational levels, contributing to art education and cultural awareness in the community.
