Alonnisos Museum

The Alonissos Museum is a private, multi-storey museum located very close to the harbour of Patitiri on the island of Alonissos.

Founded in 2000 by Kostas and Angela Mavrikis, it is considered the largest privately owned museum on any Greek island.

The museum was created to preserve and present the cultural heritage of Alonissos and the wider Aegean region. Its collection includes historical artefacts from the island’s past, as well as items connected to piracy in the Aegean Sea, reflecting an important aspect of local maritime history.

The building itself is four storeys high and combines exhibition spaces with cultural and recreational facilities. In the basement, visitors can explore dioramas of traditional island life, including costumes, tools, and representations of old professions under the theme “Alonissos at Work.”

On the ground floor there is a museum shop and an exhibition of historical cameras and photographic equipment, ranging from early box cameras to modern digital devices. The first floor hosts a conference room, displays of pirate artefacts, and exhibits dedicated to the National Resistance and local participation in historical wars.

At the top floor, the museum café “Molinaris” offers visitors a relaxing space with terraces and panoramic views over the harbour of Patitiri.

Overall, the Alonissos Museum combines folklore, maritime history, and modern cultural activity, making it an important cultural landmark on the island.
