Archaeological Museum of Astypalaia

The Archaeological Museum of Astypalaia presents a diachronic exhibition covering a wide chronological range, from prehistoric times to the medieval period.

It is housed in a ground-floor hall that was granted to the Ministry of Culture by the Astypalaia Ecclesiastical Welfare Fund in 1994. The exhibition was organized between 1995 and 1996 and was later improved and enriched with additional interpretive material and a special audiovisual program (Hichorama). The museum was officially inaugurated in September 1998.

The exhibition includes finds from various archaeological sites across the island, including the settlement of Chora, the Castle (Kastro), and the area of Kylyndra, where a unique infant cemetery in the world has been excavated, containing approximately 3,000 enchytrismoi (burials in jars). The collection features a wide variety of artifacts such as pottery, inscriptions, sculptures, architectural members, and coins. These objects collectively illustrate the historical development of Astypalaia from prehistoric to medieval times.
