Galaxidi Archaeological Collection

Galaxidi Archaeological Collection

The Archaeological Collection of Galaxidi houses finds from the wider region of Galaxidi, covering the entire historical development of the area from the Bronze Age to the end of antiquity.

The exhibits are related to private and public life, commercial activity, and the cemeteries of ancient settlements in the region, highlighting Galaxidi’s importance as a maritime and trading center.

The collection was founded in 1932 by the “Youth Association” (“Enosi Neon”), with the contribution of the then headmaster of the local primary school, Christos Papaioannou, who served as its first curator. It was initially enriched through private donations and later expanded with finds from excavations conducted by Greek and foreign archaeologists, as well as from rescue excavations carried out by the relevant Ephorate of Antiquities.

Since 1979, it has been housed in its current building, a traditional 19th-century structure that has served over time as a school, town hall, and other public institutions. Today, it is shared with the Galaxidi Maritime and Ethnological Museum, forming a unified cultural space that presents the history of the town from different perspectives.

The exhibition is organized into thematic sections and displays archaeological material in a way that highlights the historical evolution of the region and its close connection with the sea and trade. The Archaeological Collection of Galaxidi is an important cultural institution that contributes to the preservation and promotion of the town’s historical identity.
