G Schwartz Mansion of Ambelakia
The Schwarz Mansion is one of the most significant secular buildings in Greece.
It is a three-storey structure comprising reception halls, bedrooms, and auxiliary spaces. It dates back to 1787 and is distinguished by its rich decoration, including both painted and carved wooden elements.
Construction of the mansion began in 1778 as the residence of Georgios Mavros Schwarz, the president of the Cooperative of Ampelakia. It also served as the headquarters of this cooperative throughout its more than forty years of operation (1778–1820). In 1965, it was purchased by the Greek State and has since functioned as a visitable historical monument.
A representative example of 18th-century traditional architecture, the mansion has a Γ-shaped floor plan and consists of a ground floor and two upper floors, the uppermost featuring projecting enclosed balconies (sachnisia). Inside, the most remarkable feature is its wall paintings, which cover all interior spaces above the wooden paneling.
The mural decoration, created by an artist known only by the initials L.L., was completed in 1978. It includes both small and large compositions with geometric and floral motifs as well as landscape scenes, notable for their richness of themes and the skill and quality of execution.
The Schwarz Mansion has undergone extensive restoration of its exterior façades.
