Archaeological Museum of Serres

Archaeological Museum of Serres

The Archaeological Museum of Serres is housed in the historic Bezesteni, an impressive Ottoman monument dating to the late 15th century, located in the center of the city of Serres.

Originally built as a covered textile market following the architectural model of Byzantine marketplaces, the Bezesteni is considered one of the most important surviving Ottoman buildings in Macedonia.

Since 1970, the building has hosted the Archaeological Museum of Serres, where representative artifacts from across the Regional Unit of Serres are exhibited. The museum’s collections cover a long historical period, from prehistoric times to the Byzantine era, offering visitors a comprehensive view of the history and culture of the region.

The exhibition includes pottery, clay figurines, jewelry, tools, and various everyday objects from the Middle and Late Neolithic periods, as well as from the Early and Late Bronze Age. The museum also presents important findings from the Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. These artifacts originate not only from the city of Serres itself, but also from significant ancient sites in the region, such as ancient Berge and ancient Argilos.

Combining the historical importance of the Bezesteni building with its rich archaeological collections, the museum serves as a major cultural institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the cultural heritage of Serres and the wider Macedonian region.
