Distomo Archaeological Collection
The Archaeological Collection of Distomo houses important finds from the ancient Phocian city of Ambrussos (modern Distomo) and from the wider region of eastern Phocis.
The exhibition covers a long chronological span, from the Bronze Age to the early Byzantine period, offering a comprehensive view of the historical development of the area.
The collection is housed in the old primary school building of Distomo, a historic structure inaugurated in the early 20th century and later granted to the Ministry of Culture for the creation of the museum. The exhibition is organized into three main rooms and an entrance hall, with a thematic layout that highlights both the everyday life and the political and social organization of ancient Phocis.
In the entrance hall, funerary steles from the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods are displayed. The galleries present finds from necropolises, settlements, and citadels of the region, including Antikyra, Medeon, and Karakolithos. Of particular interest are objects of daily use, pottery, jewelry, as well as reconstructions of burial customs such as enchytrismoi (burials in jars) and graves with rich offerings.
The Archaeological Collection of Distomo is an important site for preserving and presenting the history of ancient Phocis. It highlights the significance of the region from prehistory to late antiquity and contributes substantially to the understanding of the culture of ancient Ambrussos.
