Athanasios Koutroumbas Insect Museum

The Entomological Museum of Volos is a unique museum in Greece and one of the largest and most complete private entomological museums in the Balkans.

It was founded by Dr. Athanasios Koutroumbas and has been operating since 1987, as the result of many years of scientific research and personal collection work.

The museum houses more than 100,000 insect specimens representing tens of thousands of species and subspecies. The collection includes insects from all continents, with a strong emphasis on butterflies (Lepidoptera), which form the largest section of the museum. Many of the exhibits are rare or remarkable, and all specimens are classified according to international scientific standards. The collection began in 1958 and continues to grow to this day. The museum also plays an important educational and research role, as it is visited by school groups, university students, and researchers for study, information, and species identification. Visits are usually arranged by appointment, offering a guided and specialized experience. The Entomological Museum of Volos is an important cultural and scientific landmark, highlighting biodiversity and the scientific study of insects.
