Frissiras Museum
The Frissiras Museum is the only museum of contemporary European painting in Greece and is located in Plaka, in the historic center of Athens
It was founded by Vlassis Frissiras and inaugurated in 2000, with the aim of creating a space dedicated exclusively to contemporary visual art.
The museum is based on the founder’s private collection, which began in 1978 and includes works by both Greek and European artists. The core focus of the collection is anthropocentric painting, emphasizing the human figure and representation at a time when many contemporary art movements were moving away from figurative art.
The Frissiras Museum is housed in two restored neoclassical buildings on Monis Asteriou Street. The first, built around 1860, is one of the oldest neoclassical houses in Athens, while the second, designed by architect Ernst Ziller, dates to the early 20th century. Both buildings have been carefully restored and adapted to serve as exhibition spaces across multiple floors.
In addition to its permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions of Greek and international artists, contributing to the dialogue between the Greek art scene and contemporary European art. Its mission is to present painting as a living form of expression that connects the past, present, and future of art.
