Museum of the Historical and Folklore Society of Acharnes
The Museum of the Historical and Folklore Society of Acharnes (Greek: Ιστορική και Λαογραφική Εταιρεία Αχαρνών – I.L.E.A.) is located in Acharnes, Attica, near the central square of the town.
It operates as a cultural institution and museum dedicated to preserving and presenting the historical memory and folk tradition of the Acharnes (Menidi) area.
Founded in 1981 as a non-profit organization, the Society gradually assembled a large collection of over 25,000 objects, mainly through donations from local residents and supporters. A selection of these items is exhibited in the museum, including traditional costumes, jewellery, household objects, agricultural tools, religious icons, historical documents, weapons, maps, and other artifacts reflecting everyday life and local history.
The museum’s aim is both educational and preservational: to safeguard cultural heritage from loss over time and to make it accessible to the public as a reference point for future generations. In addition to physical exhibits, archival material such as photographs and documents is also preserved, documenting the social and cultural evolution of the region.
Overall, the Museum of the Historical and Folklore Society of Acharnes serves as an important local institution that highlights the ethnographic and historical identity of the area through its rich and diverse collection.
