Kapodistrias Museum

Kapodistrias Museum

The Kapodistrias Museum – Centre for Kapodistrian Studies is the first and only museum in Greece dedicated exclusively to the life and work of Ioannis A. Kapodistrias, the first Governor of modern Greece.

It has been operating since 1981, with the aim of offering visitors a journey through the history of Corfu, Europe, and modern Greece by following the life and political career of this important historical figure.

The museum is housed in the former rural residence of the Kapodistrias family, a property they owned since at least the 18th century. In 1979, Maria Georgiou Kapodistria generously donated the estate to three important cultural institutions of Corfu: the Reading Society of Corfu (founded in 1836), the Philharmonic Society of Corfu (founded in 1840), and the Corfiot Studies Society (founded in 1952). Maria Kapodistria-Desylla herself was a notable personality, active in public life and philanthropy, and even served as the first elected female mayor in Greece.

The museum was officially established in 1981, though its early operation was limited due to lack of funding and staff. In 1998, with support from the Prefecture of Corfu, parts of the museum were renovated and the exhibition was reorganized. The building, along with its traditional Ionian architecture and surrounding landscape, was declared a protected historic monument by the Greek Ministry of Culture in 1995.

From 2007 onwards, thanks to the annual sponsorship of benefactor Christos Fokas, the museum significantly expanded its activities and increased its public outreach, hosting cultural events and educational programs, especially during the summer period.

In 2012, the museum temporarily closed for a major renovation and modernization project. Through European development funding (LEADER program) and support from regional and national authorities, the museum redesigned its permanent exhibition and surrounding spaces. At the same time, it strengthened its educational and research role and developed collaborations with archives and cultural institutions across Europe.

A major achievement of this period was the creation of a digital archive dedicated to Ioannis Kapodistrias, designed by a scientific research team led by Professor Christos Loukos. The archive connects historical documents from libraries and institutions across Europe and is accessible online to the global public.

The renovated museum was officially inaugurated in October 2017 by the President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos. Today, the Kapodistrias Museum is recognized as a modern cultural institution and an important landmark of Corfu, preserving and promoting the legacy of Ioannis Kapodistrias for both Greek and international audiences.
