Historical and Folklore Museum of Corinth

It operates as a private legal entity under the supervision of the Greek Ministries of Culture and Finance.

The museum was established with the aim of collecting, preserving, conserving, and presenting in a permanent exhibition the historical records and works of Greek folk tradition, with a particular focus on modern Greek cultural heritage. Its creation reflects the lifelong dedication of its founder, who had a deep interest in safeguarding elements of traditional Greek life and material culture.

The vision behind the museum was to create a cultural institution in Corinth dedicated to the preservation of the modern Greek world, covering aspects of religious, social, historical, and cultural life. The collections consist mainly of objects dating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, many of which are rare and of significant ethnographic value. These items help illustrate everyday life and traditions of the Greek people over the past few centuries.

Since its establishment, many residents of Corinth have contributed objects of historical and folkloric importance, strengthening the museum’s collections. This collective participation reflects the museum’s broader mission: to awaken historical memory, encourage social contribution, and preserve local identity and heritage for future generations.

The museum building was designed by academic architect Solon Kydo-niatis, and its construction was largely funded by the founder herself, with additional support from the Ministry of Culture. Various important cultural institutions, including the Benaki Museum, the National Historical Museum, the Museum of Greek Folk Art, and the Centre for Folklore Research of the Academy of Athens, contributed to the documentation and presentation of the collections.

Today, the museum continues its mission as an important cultural institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Greek folk tradition and historical memory.
