Historical and Folklore Museum of Giannitsa
The Historical and Folklore Museum of Giannitsa was founded in October 1997 by the Historical and Folklore Society of Giannitsa “O Filippos,” with the aim of promoting the local history and folk tradition of the area.
Admission to the museum is free, highlighting its open and educational character.
Upon entering the museum, visitors find themselves in the history room, which presents the development of the Giannitsa region from prehistoric times up to the Macedonian Struggle and the Battle of Giannitsa in 1912. Through rich visual and informational material, the historical importance of the city and its role in key events of modern Greek history are clearly showcased.
Next is the room dedicated to traditional costumes, where authentic local garments of Giannitsa residents are displayed in special cases. These costumes have been donated by local citizens to the Historical and Folklore Society and represent an important part of the area’s cultural heritage.
The exhibition continues in a large hall focusing on everyday life before the war. It includes objects from the pre-war period as well as modern reconstructions of tools and professions created by Mr. Achilleas Kannavos. This section allows visitors to experience the daily activities of the past and is often described as the “hall of memories,” as many visitors recognize elements connected to their own family history.
Another notable room features an authentic traditional reception room (“kalyos ontas”) originating from the old mansion of the Hatzidimitriou family. This space holds particular historical significance, as it was used during the Macedonian Struggle and hosted important decisions made by local community leaders that influenced the future of Macedonia.
The final exhibition room includes a traditional loom, woven textiles, embroidery, and other items that complete the depiction of a traditional Giannitsa household.
In the corridor, visitors can see archival photographs, newspapers, and printed materials from Giannitsa, as well as a unique collection of handcrafted walking sticks donated by Mr. Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
Finally, the museum’s administrative office displays photographs of the mayors of Giannitsa from the city’s liberation in 1912 to the present day, along with photographs of Members of Parliament from the Pella region. Personal items belonging to the society’s benefactors are also exhibited, and a special ecclesiastical corner presents priestly vestments and church relics.
The museum’s collections are continuously enriched through the efforts of the Historical and Folklore Society “O Filippos” and the generous donations of the citizens of Giannitsa and the surrounding region, preserving the cultural identity and history of the area.
