Archaeological Museum of Thyrreion
The Archaeological Museum of Thyrrheion is located near Vonitsa and houses important archaeological finds from ancient Thyrrheion, ancient Anaktorion, and the wider region of Acarnania.
The museum building was constructed in 1962 with the aim of preserving and presenting the rich cultural heritage of the area.
The museum’s collections mainly include funerary stelae, sculptures, and archaeological artifacts discovered in the cemeteries of the ancient cities. Through these exhibits, visitors can explore aspects of everyday life, artistic expression, and historical developments in the region during antiquity.
Among the most significant exhibits is a marble funerary relief from the second half of the 4th century BC depicting a seated figure, an excellent example of Attic art. Another important artifact is the upper part of an inscribed stele referring to the alliance between the people of Thyrrheion and the Romans in 94 BC, providing valuable evidence of the political and diplomatic relations of the period.
The museum offers visitors the opportunity to discover the history and civilization of ancient Acarnania through authentic archaeological finds that reflect the long-standing cultural development of the region.
