Archaeological Museum of Chios

The Archaeological Museum of Chios presents the history and culture of the island from the Neolithic period to the Roman era.

Its collections include finds from prehistoric settlements, sculptures from the renowned local school of sculpture, inscriptions, coins, pottery, mosaics, and funerary stelae, all of which highlight everyday life and the artistic development of ancient Chios.

The museum building is a representative example of 1960s architecture, featuring exposed concrete and glass surfaces, and is developed across three floors. It includes exhibition halls, laboratories, storage areas, lecture rooms, and educational facilities, while the courtyard contains a small amphitheatre and a restored Macedonian-type tomb.

The permanent exhibition, titled “Chios, the Seafaring City of Oinopion,” presents representative artefacts from the prehistoric to the Roman period, offering a comprehensive overview of the island’s historical development. The museum also functions as a cultural and educational centre, hosting activities that promote the rich heritage of Chios.
