Chios Byzantine Museum
The Byzantine Museum of Chios is housed in the historic Ottoman Mecidiye Mosque, a 19th-century monument that has been carefully restored and adapted to host the permanent exhibition.
The combination of the building’s architectural character and the displayed artefacts creates a unique cultural space, where the monument itself becomes part of the visitor experience.
The exhibition is dedicated to the Byzantine and post-Byzantine history of Chios, presenting sculptures, wall paintings, portable icons, wood carvings, and objects of minor arts. These exhibits highlight the island’s artistic production and spiritual life during the Byzantine and later periods.
The exhibition is organised into thematic sections accompanied by explanatory texts and visual material, offering visitors a comprehensive and accessible overview of the historical continuity of Chios.
