Chios Mastic Museum
The Chios Mastic Museum is located in the Mastichochoria region, in southern Chios, an area unique in the Mediterranean where mastic is cultivated from the Pistacia lentiscus var. chia tree
It is housed in a modern exhibition space that blends harmoniously with the surrounding natural and cultural landscape.
The museum aims to present the history, production process, and cultural significance of mastic, showcasing its cultivation and processing through a museological approach that connects the product with local society and the environment. Special emphasis is placed on the continuity and sustainability of mastic cultivation, which forms an essential part of the identity of Chios.
Mastic cultivation has been inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting the importance of traditional knowledge and its transmission from generation to generation. Through exhibitions, digital media, and educational activities, the museum highlights the culture of mastic and its connection to the social and economic life of the island.
At the same time, it functions as an educational and information centre, promoting research and awareness of intangible cultural heritage and its importance for preserving cultural identity for the future.
