Archaeological Museum of Kavala

The Archaeological Museum of Kavala is one of the most important museums in Eastern Macedonia, presenting the history and culture of the region from prehistoric times to the Roman period.

Through its collections and exhibitions, visitors gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical development of Kavala and the wider area, as well as its important role in the ancient Greek world.

The first archaeological museum in the city of Kavala was founded in 1935, one year after the appointment of archaeologist Georgios Bakalakis as the first curator of antiquities of the newly established Ephorate of Antiquities of Eastern Macedonia. The museum was initially housed in a neoclassical municipal building known as “Faliro,” which had been granted by the Municipality of Kavala. After World War II and the occupation period, the museum remained closed for several years before reopening in 1954 in the same building, which had meanwhile been donated to the Ministry of Culture.

Construction of the current museum building began in 1961, based on designs by the professors of the School of Architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Dimitris Fatouros and Ioannis Triantafyllidis. The museum officially opened to the public in December 1964, while the upper floor exhibition spaces were completed at a later stage.

A major expansion and modernization project took place with funding from the Second Community Support Framework. A new wing of the museum was constructed in collaboration with the original architect Dimitris Fatouros and his associates. The new permanent exhibition was completed in 2009, providing improved exhibition facilities and a modern museum experience for visitors.

The museum is located in a central area of Kavala, directly opposite the Regional Administration building and only a short distance from the intercity bus station (KTEL). The state airport of Kavala is located approximately 31 kilometers east of the city, making the museum easily accessible to both domestic and international visitors.

Today, the Archaeological Museum of Kavala serves as an important cultural and educational institution, promoting the archaeological heritage of Eastern Macedonia through permanent and temporary exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural activities.
