Museum of the Modern Olympic Games
The Museum of the Modern Olympic Games in Olympia is an important cultural institution dedicated to the modern history of the Olympic Movement.
It was founded in 1961 through the initiative of sports enthusiast, art lover, and philatelist Georgios Papastefanou-Provatakis, who devoted his life to collecting and preserving memorabilia related to the Modern Olympic Games. The museum was initially housed in the old primary school building of Olympia, which he transformed into an exhibition space to showcase his personal collection.
The museum officially opened to the public on September 3, 1961, under the name “Athletic Philatelic Olympic Museum.” In 1964, Georgios Papastefanou donated both the building and his collection to the Olympic Games Committee, believing it to be the most suitable institution to preserve and promote the Olympic ideal. Over the years, the collection was enriched through donations from National Olympic Committees, private individuals, and acquisitions made by the founder himself.
In 1972, a new 400-square-meter museum building was inaugurated and placed under the auspices of the International Olympic Academy. The museum’s collections include rare photographs, Olympic medals, diplomas, stamps, souvenirs, and valuable historical items that document the evolution of the Modern Olympic Games from their revival to the present day.
The Museum of the Modern Olympic Games offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the history, values, and spirit of the Olympic Games through authentic exhibits connected with some of the most important moments in international sports history.
