Archaeological Museum of Aigion

The Archaeological Museum of Aigio is an important cultural institution of Achaia, showcasing antiquities from Aigio and the wider region of Aigialeia.

It is housed in the historic building of the old Municipal Market in the center of the city, an impressive neoclassical structure attributed to the renowned German architect Ernst Ziller and dating to around 1890.

The museum first opened to the public in 1994. However, a strong earthquake caused significant damage to the building in 1995, forcing the museum to close temporarily. After restoration and structural reinforcement works were completed, the museum reopened in 1999 and continued its mission of preserving and presenting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The museum’s permanent exhibition presents antiquities from the Neolithic period to the Roman era, offering visitors a comprehensive overview of the historical development of Aigialeia. The exhibits include pottery, sculptures, jewelry, inscriptions, and everyday objects, accompanied by informative material that helps visitors better understand the history and culture of the area.

In 2024, a new extension of the exhibition was inaugurated in the museum’s courtyard. This new section presents archaeological finds from seven important excavation sites in Aigialeia. The exhibition was designed according to modern museological standards and adapted to the unique architectural character of the preserved historic building and the former market spaces surrounding the courtyard.

Today, the Archaeological Museum of Aigio, with its renovated and accessible facilities for all visitors, serves as a significant center of culture and education. Through its collections and exhibitions, it highlights the long historical continuity of Aigialeia and actively contributes to the cultural development of the region.
