Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians
The Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians is located in Zakynthos Town, on Solomos Square, and is one of the most important cultural institutions of the island.
It was established with the aim of preserving and promoting the historical and literary heritage of Zakynthos and has been operating since 1966 in a neoclassical building constructed after the devastating earthquakes of 1953.
The museum hosts valuable manuscripts, documents, and artifacts related primarily to the national poet Dionysios Solomos, as well as other prominent figures from Zakynthos. A unique feature of the museum is its Mausoleum, located on the ground floor, where the remains of Dionysios Solomos and Andreas Kalvos are preserved. This makes it the only mausoleum of its kind in Greece.
Beyond its exhibition role, the museum functions as a cultural and scholarly institution, supporting publications, research, and cultural events. It has played a significant role in preserving and highlighting the literary and historical identity of Zakynthos and the wider Ionian Islands.
