Archaeological Museum of Kalamata

Archaeological Museum of Kalamata

The Archaeological Museum of Messenia is located in Kalamata, the capital of Messenia in southern Greece.

It is housed in the reconstructed building of the old municipal market, on Agiou Ioannou Street.

The museum was created to preserve and present the rich archaeological heritage of the wider region of Messenia, bringing together important finds that were previously displayed in the Benakeion Archaeological Museum of Kalamata. That earlier museum was housed in a historic Venetian-era building which was severely damaged by the 1986 earthquake.

Its permanent exhibition is organized geographically, reflecting the traditional divisions of the region into Kalamata, Messene, Trifylia, and Pylos. Through this structure, the museum presents the cultural and historical development of Messenia from the 5th millennium BC up to the end of the Byzantine period in 1453.

The collections include artefacts from prehistoric and Mycenaean settlements, as well as material from Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine times. Together, these exhibits illustrate the long and continuous human presence in Messenia and highlight the importance of the region throughout Greek history.
