Municipal Gallery of Larissa

The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa – G. I. Katsigras Museum is one of the most important cultural institutions in Thessaly, Greece.

It was established following the donation of the Katsigras family in 1981, when Georgios and Kaiti Katsigras offered a valuable collection of 781 works of painting, engraving, and drawing to the Municipality of Larissa, under the condition that a dedicated museum building and institution would be created.

The gallery officially began operating in 1983 and has since played a significant role in promoting the visual arts in Larissa, throughout Thessaly, and in Greece more broadly. It contributes to cultural education and artistic awareness through exhibitions, educational programs, lectures, and collaborations with other museums and cultural institutions.

In November 2003, the gallery moved into its modern purpose-built facility, where a permanent exhibition of selected works from the Katsigras Collection was presented. The collection includes important artworks from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as historical furniture belonging to Heinrich Schliemann.

In 2019, the permanent exhibition was redesigned and reopened under the title “RE-CONNECT,” featuring a renewed museological approach and approximately 180 artworks from the collection, along with Schliemann’s furniture.

Today, the gallery continues to function as a dynamic cultural space, hosting temporary exhibitions, educational activities, and artistic events, while also supporting local artists and fostering cultural exchange both in Greece and internationally.
