Museum of Ancient Eleutherna
The Museum of Ancient Eleutherna – “Homer in Crete” is the first archaeological site museum in Crete and one of the island’s most important cultural institutions.
It was established to house and present the discoveries from the archaeological excavations conducted for more than thirty years at the ancient city of Eleutherna, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Crete. Although smaller in size, the museum is considered comparable to the site museums of Olympia, Delphi, and Vergina.
The museum is especially important because it presents findings connected with the Homeric world, confirming its presence and influence in Crete. One of the museum’s unique features is that its permanent exhibition is regularly renewed with newly excavated as well as older discoveries, allowing visitors to maintain an ongoing connection with the archaeological research taking place at the site. Modern audiovisual applications further enhance the visitor experience and help interpret the history and culture of ancient Eleutherna.
The museum was developed through the Operational Programme “Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship 2007–2013” (ESPA) by the University of Crete and the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, which also oversee its operation. The museum complex also includes a Study Center and research facilities, strengthening its educational and scientific role.
The archaeological site of Eleutherna is located in a beautiful natural landscape in the heart of Crete, near the historic Arkadi Monastery and the traditional village of Margarites, famous for its pottery tradition. Positioned between Heraklion and Chania, the museum is an ideal destination for day trips, offering visitors the opportunity to combine history, nature, and Cretan cultural heritage.
More than simply an exhibition space for antiquities, the Museum of Eleutherna serves as a vibrant center of education, research, and culture. Through its activities, it contributes significantly to the preservation and promotion of Crete’s cultural heritage while creating a meaningful connection between the past, the present, and the future.
