Archaeological Museum of Veroia
The Archaeological Museum of Veria has been operating since the 1960s and preserves and presents antiquities from the city of Veria and archaeological sites throughout the region of Imathia.
Its collections span a wide chronological range, from the earliest Neolithic period to the late Roman era, offering a broad overview of the area’s long and continuous human presence.
The museum is supervised by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia and is closely connected with the archaeological research carried out in the wider region. Although the exhibits currently on display mainly represent the Hellenistic and Roman periods, the museum’s storage areas hold a significant number of important finds from earlier eras, including material from the Neolithic settlement of Nea Nikomedeia and burials from the Iron Age tumulus cemetery of Vergina. One of the most important exhibits of the museum is the inscription of the “Gymnasiarchic Law” of Veria, a regulatory text that provides valuable information about the organization and function of the ancient city’s gymnasium. The museum building is single-storey and includes three exhibition halls. The first hall presents finds from Hellenistic tombs, including pottery, weapons, and jewellery, as well as a model of a chamber tomb from Veria. The second hall contains sculptures, inscriptions, figurines, and ceramics from the Hellenistic period, while the third hall is dedicated to Roman sculpture, portraits, figurines, and decorative objects. In addition to the indoor exhibition spaces, the museum’s garden displays a large number of funerary and honorary altars, as well as various inscriptions, contributing to a richer understanding of public and private life in ancient Veria. A notable recent development is the open-air installation “The Wall of Memory,” inaugurated in 2021, which presents selected funerary steles and honorary monuments, reconnecting the modern inhabitants of Veria with the memory of their ancient predecessors. Today, the Archaeological Museum of Veria serves both an educational and cultural role, highlighting the historical continuity of the region and contributing to the study and appreciation of its ancient heritage.
