Archaeological Museum of Kissamos

The Archaeological Museum of Kissamos Archaeological Museum of Kissamos is housed in the historic building of the former Venetian–Ottoman administrative headquarters, located within the Kastelli Castle of Kissamos.

It operates under the jurisdiction of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania. The original archaeological collection of Kissamos was established in 1936 by the Philological Society of Kastelli and was first exhibited in 1937, marking the beginning of organized museological activity in the area.

The permanent exhibition is displayed on both the ground floor and the upper floor of the building, offering a comprehensive overview of the history of the wider Kissamos region from prehistoric times to the late antiquity period. Special emphasis is placed on the Roman city of Kissamos, which forms a central focus of the exhibition on the upper level. The exhibits are arranged both chronologically and thematically, based on excavation assemblages that illustrate the development of local civilization over time.

The exhibition is supported by interpretive panels and digital material, including presentations and research documentation on major historical events such as the devastating earthquake of 365 AD, which significantly affected Crete and led to the destruction of Kissamos. Through this approach, the museum serves as an important center for the study and promotion of the archaeological heritage of the region.
