Maritime Museum of Crete
The Maritime Museum of Crete is one of the most important maritime museums in Greece and is located at the entrance of the old Venetian harbor of Chania, inside the historic Firka Fortress.
The fortress was originally built by the Venetians during their rule of Crete from 1204 to 1669 in order to serve as a military garrison and protect the harbor. During the Ottoman period, it continued to function as military barracks, and the name “Firka,” meaning barracks in Ottoman Turkish, remains in use today.
The site has an important place in modern Greek history because it was here, on December 1, 1913, that the Greek flag was officially raised during the ceremony marking the union of Crete with Greece.
The museum was founded in 1973 on the anniversary of the Battle of Crete by Vice Admiral Aristeidis Giannopoulos of the Hellenic Navy. Today, it is considered the second oldest maritime museum in Greece after the Maritime Museum of Greece in Piraeus and welcomes thousands of visitors every year.
The purpose of the museum is to preserve and promote the maritime history and naval traditions of Crete and Greece. Through its collections and exhibitions, it highlights the deep connection between the Greek people and the sea and emphasizes the importance of maritime heritage in the country’s history, economy, and cultural identity.
Its collections include ship models, naval instruments, maps, photographs, historical documents, weapons, paintings, and artifacts related to maritime life and naval warfare. The exhibitions present a broad historical journey from ancient naval history to modern maritime activities and the events of the Second World War.
In addition to preserving maritime heritage, the museum also promotes environmental awareness and the protection of the marine environment. Educational programs, cultural activities, and exhibitions encourage visitors to better understand the importance of the sea and maritime culture.
The Maritime Museum of Crete operates with the support of the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Chania, the Naval Base of Crete, and the Hellenic Navy, continuing to serve as an important cultural and educational institution for both local and international visitors.
