Museum of Mineralogy and Paleontology Stamatiadis Rhodes
The Stamatiadis Mineralogy and Paleontology Museum is the first museum of its kind in Rhodes and the wider Dodecanese region, dedicated to the fascinating world of mineralogy, paleontology, and geology.
Established in 2008 by Polychronis E. Stamatiadis, the museum was created with the vision of promoting geological science and inspiring visitors to develop a deeper respect for nature and Earth’s history.
The museum is housed on the ground floor of the modern PERLA MARINA hotel complex in Ialyssos, Rhodes, covering an exhibition area of approximately 300 square meters. Its carefully designed displays feature an impressive collection of minerals, rocks, gemstones, and fossils from Greece and around the world. Visitors can admire spectacular specimens such as Azurite, Malachite, Calcite, Galena, Sulfur, Obsidian, Bentonite, Garnet, Barite, and many more minerals originating from famous geological regions including Lavrion, Milos, Naxos, Serifos, and Sifnos.
One of the museum’s unique features is its collection of minerals found in Rhodes itself, including Artinite, Hydromagnesite, Serpentine, Quartz, Crocidolite, and Selenite. These exhibits highlight the island’s important geological heritage and mineral wealth.
The paleontological section of the museum presents a remarkable variety of fossils dating back millions of years. Visitors can explore fossilized marine organisms from the Neogene and Pliocene epochs, fossilized tree trunks and plants, ancient ammonites from the Triassic period, fossil fish from the Cretaceous era, and impressive trilobites from Morocco dating back more than 440 million years. Among the most striking exhibits is a fossilized crocodile skull from the Miocene period.
The museum was created not only as an exhibition space but also as an educational and cultural center. Its goal is to make geology and natural history accessible to people of all ages, including students, researchers, collectors, and visitors who simply wish to discover the beauty and mystery of the natural world. Educational facilities and a projection hall allow visitors to watch documentaries and presentations related to nature, fossils, and the environment.
A visit to the museum offers a unique opportunity to travel through Earth’s geological past and better understand the evolution of life on our planet. Through its rich collections and educational activities, the Stamatiadis Mineralogy and Paleontology Museum encourages curiosity, scientific learning, and environmental awareness.
The museum is located at 33 Heraklidon Avenue in Ialyssos, just 7 kilometers from Rhodes Town and 5 kilometers from Diagoras International Airport, making it easily accessible to visitors from around the world.
