Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art
MOMus – Museum of Contemporary Art (formerly the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Museum of Contemporary Art collections) is one of the most important institutions for contemporary art in Greece.
It is a pioneering museum dedicated to the conservation, study, promotion, and presentation of contemporary visual art and culture. Its mission is to support artistic creation and make contemporary art accessible to the wider public.
The museum’s collections are largely the result of significant donations from major figures in the art world, including Alexander Iolas, Alexandros and Dorothy Xydis, Georges Aperghis, and other important collectors and artists. These collections, together with works from the former State Museum of Contemporary Art, form a valuable public cultural heritage. Today, the museum holds more than 2,000 works of painting, sculpture, engraving, and photography by both Greek and international artists.
MOMus actively promotes contemporary art through permanent and temporary exhibitions, international collaborations, publications, and cultural events. A major highlight of its activity is its participation in initiatives such as the Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, which strengthens its role as a dynamic centre of artistic dialogue.
The museum was originally established in 1979 as the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, with the aim of introducing Greek and international audiences to contemporary artistic trends and supporting Greek cultural presence abroad. Over time, it expanded its activities, collection, and influence, becoming a key institution in the Greek contemporary art scene.
Today, MOMus continues to function as a vibrant cultural organisation with the mission of fostering creativity, education, and critical thinking. It also organises educational programmes for students and children, workshops, lectures, and interactive activities that bring young audiences closer to contemporary art.
With its headquarters in Thessaloniki and additional spaces in Athens, such as the MOMus Museum Alex Mylona, the institution plays an important role in both the national and international art community. Through its exhibitions and programmes, MOMus serves as a bridge between artists and society, contributing to cultural development and contemporary artistic expression in Greece.
