Art Gallery of the Society of Macedonian Studies

The Society for Macedonian Studies was founded on 29 April 1939 in Thessaloniki by prominent members of the city’s intellectual and commercial community.

Its aim was to collect, record, study, and publish material related to Macedonia, including archival documents, linguistic and folkloric material, and examples of folk art.

At the same time, it sought to promote education and culture through publications, research, libraries, and various cultural initiatives. A major part of its work includes the publication of academic journals and books, as well as the organization of conferences and lectures.

The Society is housed in three connected buildings in central Thessaloniki, which include a library, an art gallery, a theatre, a cinema, and various research departments. Its library holds around 70,000 volumes along with rare collections, while its art gallery hosts hundreds of artworks.

As part of its activities, the Society has established or supported important institutions such as the Institute for Balkan Studies, the Historical Archive of Macedonia, and other cultural centres. Overall, it is one of the most significant intellectual institutions in Northern Greece, with strong research and publishing activity.
