Folklore Museum Polygyros

The Folklore Museum of Polygyros began operating in 1998 and is housed in the renovated two-storey residence of the former mayor of Polygyros, Athanasios Karagkanis, who donated the building for this purpose.

Its collections consist mainly of donations from the inhabitants of Polygyros and the surrounding area, reflecting the everyday life and traditions of the local community.

On the ground floor, visitors can explore traditional agricultural tools used for ploughing, sowing, harvesting, threshing, and olive gathering, as well as displays of traditional clothing from the region. These exhibits highlight the rural way of life and the seasonal rhythms of agricultural work in the area.

On the upper floor, the museum recreates the interior of a 19th-century urban home. The rooms include a reception area with sofas and low round tables, a dining room, bedrooms furnished with metal beds, wardrobes, and bedding, as well as a kitchen equipped with cooking utensils, cauldrons, pans, and a traditional fireplace. A separate room features a traditional loom, demonstrating textile production techniques. Traditional costumes from the wider Polygyros region are also displayed throughout the house, alongside a recently arranged office space of Mayor Karagkanis.

The museum is operated with the care and voluntary support of the Women’s Cultural Association of Polygyros, in cooperation with the Municipal Enterprise of Polygyros. It offers visitors an immersive experience of local heritage, preserving and presenting the cultural memory of the region.
