Museum of the Battle of Lahanas
The Lachanas Military Museum is a military museum located near Thessaloniki, Greece, dedicated to the Battle of Kilkis–Lachanas during the Second Balkan War.
The museum is situated close to the village of Lachanas in the municipality of Lagkadas and is accessible by appointment. It is under the supervision of the Hellenic Army General Staff and serves as a commemorative site focusing on one of the most important battles of 1913 between Greek and Bulgarian forces.
The outdoor area of the museum features captured Bulgarian artillery pieces, including cannons of different calibres, which serve as direct historical evidence of the battlefield outcomes.
Inside the museum, the exhibition includes a large relief map illustrating troop movements and phases of the battle, as well as a wide range of military artifacts such as rifles (including Mannlicher 8 mm models), machine guns, shells, artillery fragments, bayonets, and officers’ swords. The collection also features Greek military uniforms, including that of Lieutenant Colonel Papakyriakos, who was killed during the battle of Lachanas.
Portraits of key historical figures of the Balkan Wars, such as Eleftherios Venizelos and Crown Prince Constantine I, are also displayed. In addition, the museum includes notable paintings by Kenan Mesare, depicting scenes from the battle and reflecting the perspective of an artist connected to the Ottoman command structure.
Overall, the museum presents a focused narrative of the Battle of Lachanas, combining artifacts, visual material, and historical documentation to help visitors understand the military events and their significance in modern Greek history.
