War Museum of Thessaloniki
The Thessaloniki branch of the Army Museum was established in 1993 and began operating in 2000.
It is located within the wider area of the Pedion tou Areos military camp, in a historic building designed in the early 20th century by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli (1838–1918), originally constructed to serve the needs of the Ottoman Army.
Today, the museum is housed in this architecturally significant structure, which reflects the military and urban history of Thessaloniki during the late Ottoman period. The building itself is an important heritage monument, linking the city’s modern cultural institutions with its historical past.
The museum’s mission is to preserve, document, and present the military history of Greece, with a particular focus on Thessaloniki and the broader Macedonian region. Through its collections, it highlights key aspects of military life, historical conflicts, uniforms, weapons, maps, and archival material that trace the evolution of the Greek armed forces and their role in national history.
In addition to its permanent exhibition, the Thessaloniki branch supports educational activities and research initiatives, aiming to familiarize the public—especially younger generations—with Greece’s military heritage. It also contributes to cultural events and collaborations that promote historical awareness and respect for national history.
Overall, the Army Museum of Thessaloniki functions as both a historical archive and an educational institution, connecting visitors with the military and historical legacy of the region in an engaging and informative way.
