Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesvos and is considered one of the most important geological museums in Greece.
Founded in 1994, the museum was created to study, preserve, protect, and promote the unique Petrified Forest of Lesvos, an exceptional natural monument of global importance.
The museum is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and also participates in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, highlighting the international significance of the region’s geological heritage.
The Petrified Forest of Lesvos was formed approximately 20 million years ago, when intense volcanic activity covered the area’s vegetation with volcanic materials. Over time, the trees and plants gradually fossilized, creating one of the largest and best preserved petrified forests in the world. Today, the protected area includes hundreds of fossilized tree trunks, roots, leaves, and plant remains preserved in remarkable condition.
The permanent exhibitions of the museum present the evolution of plant life on Earth, the geological history of the Aegean region, and the natural processes that led to the creation of the petrified forest. Visitors can admire rare fossilized remains from more than forty different plant species, including sequoias, pines, cinnamon trees, laurels, and palm trees.
The museum functions not only as an exhibition space but also as an important center for scientific research and education. It includes fossil conservation laboratories, a library, temporary exhibition halls, and educational programs for students and visitors of all ages. In addition, the museum organizes geotourism activities and guided tours to the outdoor parks of the Petrified Forest, such as the Nissiopi Park, where visitors can observe fossilized tree trunks in their original natural position.
With its unique collections, modern exhibition methods, and continuous scientific and educational activities, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest serves as an important center of knowledge, culture, and environmental awareness, attracting visitors from all over the world.
