Archaeological Museum of Polygyros

Archaeological Museum of Polygyros

The Archaeological Museum of Polygyros is located in the center of Polygyros, the capital of Halkidiki, within a pine-covered site.

Its construction began in 1969 based on the designs of architect Dimitris Fatouros, and the museum first opened to the public in 1971, initially presenting a small but representative collection of archaeological finds from the region of Halkidiki.

Over the following decades, the continuous discovery of important archaeological material from systematic excavations across Halkidiki made the expansion of the museum necessary. This expansion was completed through European co-funded programs, resulting in a modern permanent exhibition inaugurated in 2022.

The new exhibition is organized into thematic sections covering the history of Halkidiki from prehistoric times to the Roman period. It presents findings from major ancient settlements such as Agios Mamas, Olynthos, and Toroni, as well as from cemeteries and sanctuaries of the region. Special emphasis is placed on funerary monuments and sculptures from the historical periods, which highlight the social and cultural development of the area.

A central feature of the exhibition is the Lampropoulos Collection, which significantly enriches the museum with rare and important artifacts. The visitor experience is further enhanced through modern multimedia applications, interactive maps, digital screens, and audiovisual installations, offering a more engaging and educational understanding of Halkidiki’s history and archaeology.

Today, the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros serves as an important cultural hub for the region, combining scientific documentation with contemporary museological presentation methods.
