Museum of Photography Thessaloniki
The MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography is a leading cultural institution in Greece dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of photographic art.
Its mission is to foster public engagement with photography, enhance aesthetic education, and introduce audiences to both historical and contemporary photographic movements.
The museum’s collections consist of approximately 120,000 photographic objects and negatives, dating from 1890 to 2024. These include important archives such as those of Giannis Stylianos, Socrates Iordanidis, and Dimitris Letsios. It also serves as the custodian of the Greek part of the Fred Boissonnas archive, which belongs to the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Through these collections, the museum preserves a valuable visual record of social, historical, and artistic developments in Greece and beyond.
A key objective of the museum is the continuous enrichment and organization of its photographic archives, as well as the wider dissemination of photographic art both in Greece and internationally. It actively promotes photography through exhibitions, educational programs, research initiatives, and cultural collaborations.
One of its most important contributions to the cultural life of Thessaloniki is the organization of the Thessaloniki Photobiennale, a major international photography event that brings together artists, curators, and audiences from around the world.
Overall, the MOMus–Thessaloniki Museum of Photography functions as both an archive and a living cultural center, encouraging dialogue between past and contemporary photographic practices while making photography accessible and meaningful to the public.
